The physical properties of outer space are distinctly different from the terrestrial environment. Human activities are rarely correctable and could render important parts of space un-useable. While space has become a strategic focus for national security interests, its appeal has also increased for commercial purposes. The distinctions between civil, military and commercial space assets are blurring, creating interdependence and mutual vulnerabilities. And while the ongoing development of technology opens space to use for some purposes and by some actors, it may also deny the secure use of space for other legitimate purposes and actors.

Space Security is an annual report on trends and developments related to security and outer space. Actions and developments related to space security are assessed according to nine indicators: the space environment; space situational awareness; space laws, policies and doctrines; civil space programs and global utilities; commercial space; space support for terrestrial military operations; space systems protection; space systems negation; and space-based strike capabilities.

Space Security is part of the broader Space Security Index project, which aims to improve transparency with respect to space activities and provide a common, comprehensive knowledge base to support the development of national and international policies that contribute to space security.
