In most contemporary wars, most of the damage is
done by small arms and light weapons (SALW). Civil society efforts
to support effective action on small arms have also intensified in
recent years and led to the 1999 formation of International NGO Action
Network on Small Arms (IANSA) following an international conference
on small arms hosted by Project Ploughshares in August 1998 in Canada.
Our small arms program involves initiatives both in
Canada and internationally to address the extraordinary toll in
lives lost and development deferred that is exacted through the
global diffusion of small arm and light weapons. An important element
of our work is to support the implementation, and improvement, of
the UN Programme of Action agreed to by governments at the July
2001 UN Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light
Weapons in All Its Aspects.
