Program Updates

“Reaching Out: New Approaches to Security in Space”

On January 8, 2009 Project Ploughshares and Secure World Foundation organized an event hosted by the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C. on new approaches to security in space. Drawing on a sense of renewal following the election of President Barack Obama, the event sought to identify critical challenges and opportunities to address them through a framework of cooperative security and peaceful uses in outer space. Jessica West, Ploughshares Program Associate and Program Manager of the Space Security Index, was the keynote speaker. She was followed by Dr. Scott Pace, Director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, Richard DalBello, Vice-President of Government Relations at Intelsat General, and Clay Mowry, President of Arianespace Inc. The event was attended by 70 people from civil, commercial, and military space communities in Washington D.C. as well as representatives from the US Congress.

Arms Trade Treaty

On January 23, Senior Program Associate Ken Epps attended the New York organizational meeting of the United Nations working group that over the next three years will deliberate on details of an international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The new ATT “Open Ended Working Group” established by a General Assembly resolution on Christmas Eve is open to all UN member states. It will hold its first week-long session in early March in New York. With other members of the ATT Steering Committee (the civil society network promoting an ATT), Ken also met with diplomats in advance of the Friday meeting to encourage states to speak in favour of constructive and open procedures for the Working Group.

Speaking Engagements

Executive Director John Siebert made a presentation on January 24, 2009 at the student-organized Wilfrid Laurier University Global Citizenship Conference. He was part of a panel looking at building links from problems to solutions on issues that challenge global citizens.
